Kärcher History

Kärcher was founded on 2 January 1935 by engineer Alfred Kärcher in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany. Having worked for eleven years in his father's industrial heating equipment business, Alfred established his own company initially focused on innovative heating technology, developing industrial furnaces and preheating systems for aircraft engines. The company relocated to Winnenden, near Stuttgart, in 1939, and today Winnenden remains Kärcher's global headquarters. When the Second World War ended, Alfred turned the company's engineering expertise to peaceful purposes, manufacturing furnaces and construction drying equipment to aid Germany's post-war reconstruction.

The defining moment in Kärcher's history came in 1950, when Alfred developed Europe's first hot-water high-pressure cleaner, the DS 350 steam jet. This invention laid the foundation for everything the company has become. Alfred Kärcher died in 1959 at the age of 58, leaving behind his wife Irene, who took over the business. Under Irene's leadership - which lasted until her own death in 1989 - revenues grew by 70% in the first year alone, and the company embarked on international expansion, establishing its first overseas subsidiary in France in 1962. In 1974, Kärcher made a strategic decision to focus entirely on cleaning technology, and adopted the now-iconic yellow colour for all its products. Irene Kärcher was posthumously listed by the German trade journal Handelsblatt as the first woman in its Hall of Fame.

Today, Kärcher is the undisputed global market leader in cleaning technology. The company employs 17,000 people, operates in 85 countries through 170 companies, and posted sales of €3.44 billion in 2024. It remains a privately held, family-owned business.
