Kenwood was founded in 1947 by Kenneth Maynard Wood, an electrical engineer who had honed his skills working on radar systems during the Second World War. Starting from a small workshop in Woking, Surrey, Wood set out to produce labour-saving domestic appliances for the growing post-war consumer market. His first product was the A100 Turnover Toaster, but it was his second - the A200 food mixer of 1948 - that pointed the company towards its future. The iconic Kenwood Chef was launched at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1950 and sold out immediately at Harrods within a week of going on sale. Its debut retail price was approximately £20, equivalent to around 5% of the average annual salary at the time.
The Kenwood Chef became a design classic as well as a commercial success. A landmark redesign by industrial designer Kenneth Grange in 1960 - who would later also design British Rail's InterCity 125 train - gave the Chef the sleek, timeless silhouette that is still recognisable today. The company moved from Woking to a purpose-built factory in Havant, Hampshire in 1962, which remains the brand's UK base. By the mid-1950s, Kenwood was exporting over 80% of its production, with a turnover of £1.5 million. After changing hands several times - including acquisition by Thorn Electrical Industries in 1968 and a management buyout from Thorn EMI in 1989 - Kenwood joined the De'Longhi Group in 2001, alongside the Braun Household brand. It remains part of the De'Longhi Group today, with its design and engineering team based in Havant. By 2010, when the Kenwood Chef celebrated its 60th anniversary, over 15 million had been sold worldwide.
Kenwood's flagship product is the Chef stand mixer range, which spans from the classic Chef Foundation and Chef XL through to the premium Cooking Chef, which incorporates induction heating technology beneath the bowl to allow cooking directly in the mixer. Attachments are available for pasta rolling, spiralising, mincing, juicing, slicing and more, making the Chef one of the most versatile kitchen machines available. The kMix range offers a more compact, colourful alternative for everyday baking.
Kenwood produce a comprehensive range of food processors, from the compact EasyChop and MultiPro Go to the full-size MultiPro XL Weigh+. These machines handle chopping, slicing, grating, blending and dough-making, with multiple bowl sizes and interchangeable blade sets. The MultiPro range has won multiple Red Dot and iF Design Awards in recent years.
Alongside their food preparation range, Kenwood offer hand blenders, countertop blenders, kettles, toasters and coffee makers. The Triblade hand blender and the Blend-X Pro countertop blender are among their most highly regarded products. Kenwood's breakfast appliance collections - including the Dusk and Dawn ranges - are designed to complement each other aesthetically on the kitchen worktop.
The Kenwood Chef is a heavy-duty stand mixer designed for serious home baking and cooking, with a powerful motor, a large bowl capacity and a wide range of optional attachments. The kMix is a smaller, lighter, more colourful stand mixer aimed at everyday baking tasks. The Chef is the more capable and upgradeable machine; the kMix is better suited to occasional use and smaller kitchens.
Most Kenwood products come with a minimum one-year manufacturer's warranty. Selected models - particularly in the Chef and food processor ranges - carry extended warranties of up to five years when registered on the Kenwood website. It is worth checking the individual product listing for the specific warranty period.
Yes - many Kenwood Chef attachments are compatible across different generations of the Chef range. The front attachment hub accepts a wide variety of accessories including pasta rollers, mincers, spiralisers, slicers, juicers and ice cream makers. It is worth checking the Kenwood compatibility guide when purchasing attachments to confirm fit with your specific model.
