Leekes is one of the UK’s great independent home department stores, with roots going back to an ironmongery business founded in the Rhondda Valley in 1897. Today the business operates superstores in Llantrisant, Cross Hands, Melksham and Bilston (as Cole’s Home Furnishers), plus the Park Furnishers store in Bristol, drawing over 60,000 visitors per week. The range spans furniture, kitchens, bathrooms, beds and mattresses, flooring, rugs, home accessories, garden furniture and gifts. The depth and quality of product across each category reflects more than 125 years of home retail expertise, and the multi-million pound refurbishment of the Llantrisant flagship completed in 2024 further strengthens the in-store experience.
Leekes delivers furniture and large items across the UK, with delivery charges and timescales varying by product type and location. Large furniture is delivered by a two-person team with a booked delivery slot. Smaller items are dispatched by courier with tracking provided. In-store collection is available from any of the Leekes superstore locations. As with most independent furniture retailers, lead times on made-to-order items such as sofas and fitted furniture can extend to several weeks, which is standard across the industry.
Returns are accepted within 14 days for items in original, unused condition with proof of purchase. Large furniture returns are handled by arrangement and may incur a collection charge. Made-to-order products cannot be returned unless faulty, which is standard practice. Leekes’s longevity and independent status mean customer complaints are taken seriously — the business has a strong local reputation built over generations that it actively works to protect.
With stores staffed by knowledgeable home furnishing specialists and a head office team in Wales, Leekes offers a level of in-person expertise that is increasingly rare in UK home retail. Phone and email support are available for online and remote customers. Kitchen, bathroom and bedroom design consultations are available in-store. The Cheltenham store opened in November 2024, reflecting continued confidence in the in-store retail model. Emma Leeke now leads the business — the fifth generation of family management.
Leekes operates large-format superstores which carry a higher energy footprint than purely online retailers, though the company has invested in energy efficiency improvements as part of its recent store refurbishment programme. As a family-owned independent business with a focus on quality, long-lasting home furnishings rather than fast-turnover disposable products, Leekes’s product proposition inherently supports more sustainable consumption patterns. No standalone published carbon strategy is currently available.
Leekes was founded in 1897 by blacksmith James Henry Leeke in Tonypandy in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales. James ran a smithy for sharpening tools from behind the family's terraced home in Clydach Vale, before opening a small ironmongery business in the front room. He and his wife sold to the local miners and their families who were moving into the area in growing numbers as the South Wales coal industry expanded. The business survived the upheavals of the early twentieth century intact, and in 1933 James's son Llewellyn took over at the age of 22. Llewellyn bought a larger shop on Dunraven Street, Tonypandy in 1948, and throughout this period the ironmongery and builders' merchant was run almost entirely by the family.
In the late 1960s, Gerald Leeke joined full-time and oversaw a significant expansion, adding kitchen and bathroom displays and acquiring adjacent properties. Company turnover grew from £38,000 in 1965 to £500,000 by 1975. In 1977 Leekes opened their first out-of-town superstore in Talbot Green, near Llantrisant £ one of the first out-of-town home department stores in the UK £ converting a former factory into a comprehensive store selling building materials alongside furniture, kitchens and bathrooms. A second out-of-town store followed in Cross Hands, Carmarthenshire in 1984, complete with a garden centre and restaurant, and a third in Melksham, Wiltshire in 1992. In 2009 Leekes acquired the Midlands-based Cole's Home Furnishers Group including its flagship store in Bilston, Wolverhampton, and in 2016 they acquired Park Furnishers, Bristol's largest independent furniture store, which continues to trade under its own name. A new Leekes store opened in Cheltenham in November 2024, and the Llantrisant flagship store underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment completing in 2024. The business is now managed by Emma Leeke and draws over 60,000 visitors through its doors each week.
Leekes has also diversified significantly beyond retail. In 1993 the company purchased a 650-acre site in Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan and developed it into The Vale Resort £ a four-star hotel with 143 bedrooms, two championship golf courses, the largest spa in Wales, and a 700-seat conference facility. In 2003 they acquired the adjacent Hensol Castle, a grade I listed seventeenth-century stately home that is now operated as a wedding and events venue. In 2018 the castle cellars were converted into a gin distillery producing award-winning gin. The Football Association of Wales and the Welsh Rugby Union both use The Vale Resort as their base for training camps.
