Miele was founded on 1 July 1899 by engineer Carl Miele and businessman Reinhard Zinkann in Herzebrock, a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The company began in a former grain mill with just eleven employees, four lathes and one drilling machine, manufacturing cream separators for the local farming industry. A year later the product range expanded to include the Meteor butter churn. The first Miele washing machine - a wooden tub with a rotating drum operated by a hand lever - followed in 1901. The company moved its headquarters and production to nearby Gütersloh in 1907, where it has been based ever since. From the outset, the founders inscribed their guiding principle directly onto their machines: Immer besser - "Forever better."
Miele's expansion into new product categories was rapid. The first electrically powered washing machine appeared in 1910, the company introduced one of Germany's first company health insurance schemes in 1909, and in 1929 Miele produced Europe's first electric dishwasher. The first Miele vacuum cleaner, the Melior, launched in 1927. Between 1912 and 1914 the company even produced 143 automobiles - a venture quickly abandoned due to the capital requirements involved. Bicycle and motorcycle production ran from 1924 until 1960 at the Bielefeld factory. The first fully automatic washing machine followed in 1956, the first domestic electric tumble dryer in 1958, and the first fully automatic built-in coffee maker in 1998.
Despite changing hands across generations, Miele has remained entirely family-owned throughout its 125-year history. Today the Miele family holds 51.1% and the Zinkann family holds 48.9% of the company. The current executive co-proprietors - Dr Markus Miele and Dr Reinhard Zinkann - are the great-grandsons of the two founders. The company now employs more than 22,000 people across 49 countries, with 15 production plants of which eight are in Germany. Annual turnover is approximately €4.96 billion. In 2007, Miele was named the most successful company in Germany - ahead of Google in second place and Porsche in third - and was named Best Domestic Appliance Brand in the UK by Which? in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Miele appliances are designed and tested to last 20 years under normal household use.
Miele's W1 washing machine and T1 tumble dryer ranges are among the most highly regarded laundry appliances available in the UK. Features include the patented honeycomb drum, TwinDos automatic detergent dispensing, and the QuickIntense Wash programme. Heat pump dryers from the T1 range are among the most energy-efficient available. Miele also pioneered the wet-cleaning process for delicate "dry clean only" garments.
Miele dishwashers are known for their build quality, energy efficiency and the AutoDos automatic powder dispensing system. The G 7000 series includes features such as the 3D cutlery tray, flexible basket configurations and the EcoTech heat exchanger for improved drying performance.
Miele produce bagged and bagless upright and cylinder vacuum cleaners, including the Classic C1, Complete C3, Triflex cordless and the Boost CX1 bagless range. The AirClean filtration system - including the Active AirClean and HEPA AirClean filters - is a key differentiator for allergy sufferers. Miele bagged vacuums are consistently rated among the top performers by consumer testing organisations.
Miele produce a full suite of built-in ovens, steam ovens, combination steam ovens, induction and gas hobs, cooker hoods, microwaves and speed ovens. Their fully automatic built-in coffee machines - including the CVA series - are particularly well regarded, capable of grinding, tamping and brewing from fresh beans. Refrigeration includes integrated and freestanding fridge freezers and wine coolers.
Miele design and test their appliances to a service life of 20 years under normal household use - significantly above the industry average. All Miele products undergo extensive endurance and stress testing before market launch. This longevity is central to Miele's "Immer besser" brand philosophy and is why the brand is considered a long-term investment rather than a commodity purchase.
Miele appliances carry a premium price reflecting their build quality, engineering standards and expected service life of 20 years. Over the lifetime of the appliance, the per-year cost of ownership is often competitive with cheaper alternatives that require replacement more frequently. Miele has won the Which? Best Domestic Appliance Brand award multiple times and consistently scores highly in independent consumer tests in the UK and Germany.
The majority of Miele products are manufactured in Germany, with eight of the company's fifteen production plants based there. Gütersloh remains the company's global headquarters and principal production site. Miele also operates plants in Austria, the Czech Republic, Romania, China and, since 2024, a new facility in Alabama, USA for large-volume ovens and cookers designed for the North American market.
Miele do not currently advertise a dedicated NHS or student discount programme. Their outlet section - offering ex-display, refurbished and end-of-line products - provides the best opportunity for savings on Miele appliances, as does the Black Friday promotional period each November.
Miele participate in Black Friday each November with discounts across their laundry, floorcare, cooking and dishwasher ranges. The outlet section also carries ex-display, refurbished and clearance Miele appliances at reduced prices year-round. As with most premium appliance brands, Black Friday is the most significant promotional event of the year for new product discounts.
Miele has been owned exclusively by the founding families throughout its entire history. The Miele family currently holds 51.1% and the Zinkann family holds 48.9% of the company. The current executive co-proprietors are Dr Markus Miele and Dr Reinhard Zinkann, great-grandsons of the original founders Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann. Miele has never been listed on a stock exchange.
Miele products in the UK typically carry a two-year manufacturer's warranty as standard. Extended warranty options are available through Miele directly, covering parts and labour for a longer period. Given that Miele appliances are designed for a 20-year service life, extended warranty cover can represent good value on higher-value items such as washing machines, dishwashers and coffee machines.
Miele participate in Black Friday each November with promotional pricing on washing machines, tumble dryers, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and cooking appliances. As a premium brand, Miele's Black Friday discounts tend to be meaningful rather than token, and the event represents one of the best opportunities in the year to purchase a Miele appliance at below full retail price. The Miele outlet section carries ex-display, refurbished and end-of-line stock at reduced prices throughout the year, making it worth checking regardless of the time of year.
