River Island was founded in 1948 by Bernard Lewis, the son of Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants, who opened his first clothing shop on Mare Street in Hackney, east London. Before fashion, Lewis had run a fruit and vegetable stall on Holloway Road with his brothers after leaving the RAF following the Second World War. The pivot to clothing came quickly: Lewis took over a bombed-out site and began selling knitting wool alongside women's blouses and skirts - items then known in the trade as "separates." He sold his first self-made garment in 1950, a white lace-trimmed blouse. In an early and pioneering move, Lewis began designing his own stock rather than buying in from wholesalers, making him arguably the first UK fashion retailer to operate an in-house design facility. He also began travelling twice a year to Hong Kong to source styles unavailable to rivals - as early as 1962. His three brothers joined the business and the chain expanded under the name Lewis Separates, reaching 70 stores nationwide by the mid-1960s.

In 1965 the brand was renamed Chelsea Girl, inspired by the King's Road store in Chelsea - at the time the epicentre of Swinging London fashion, music and pop culture. The first Chelsea Girl opened in Leeds on 13 May 1965. The boutique format was deliberately immersive: low lighting, loud music, and daily new stock arrivals made the stores a weekly destination. Chelsea Girl rode the mini-dress wave - Bernard Lewis later recalled that dresses went from 5% to 50% of fashion turnover between spring and autumn 1965. The chain reached 83 stores by 1973. In the 1980s, Leonard Lewis, Bernard's son, introduced menswear for the first time under the Chelsea Man and then Concept Man brands. In 1988, Leonard came up with the River Island name after a boat trip on the Thames, opening the first River Island in Exeter. The new name performed so well that the entire business was rebranded from Chelsea Girl to River Island the same year.

Bernard Lewis received the Drapers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, continued working five days a week into his late nineties, and was still personally visiting stores and sending iPad feedback in his final years. He died on 28 February 2026, aged 100. River Island is privately owned by the Lewis family through the Lewis Trust Group. The business has 250 stores across the UK, is present in over 125 countries, and all collections are designed in-house at the West London headquarters. Will Kernan has been CEO since 2019.
