Burberry History

Burberry was founded in 1856 when 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, a former draper’s apprentice from Brockham Green in Surrey, opened an outfitter’s shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Burberry was frustrated by the heavy, stifling mackintosh coats of the era and set about creating something better. In 1879 he invented gabardine — a tightly woven, breathable, water-resistant fabric made from pre-treated Egyptian cotton yarn — which he patented in 1888. The fabric proved revolutionary, and in 1891 Burberry opened premises in London’s Haymarket, cementing the brand’s move into the capital. In 1901 the Equestrian Knight logo was introduced, bearing the Latin motto “Prorsum” (meaning “forwards”), and registered as a trademark in 1909.

The Burberry trench coat was developed in response to a request from the British War Office around 1900. Its design — featuring epaulettes, D-ring belt clasps, deep storm flap and buckled cuffs — became standard-issue for officers in the First World War and has remained a cultural icon ever since. Explorers including Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton also wore Burberry gabardine on polar expeditions. The distinctive camel, black, white and red check pattern — now known as the Burberry Check — was introduced as a lining in the 1920s and became one of the most recognisable patterns in the world. Burberry received Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II in 1955 and the Prince of Wales in 1990.

The company floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2002 and is now a constituent of the FTSE 100. It has been led creatively by Christopher Bailey (2001–2018), Riccardo Tisci (2018–2022) and Daniel Lee (2022–present). Today Burberry operates over 500 stores worldwide, with its headquarters in London. The Burberry Outlet offers past-season and end-of-line pieces at reduced prices, typically 30–60% below mainline retail.

Common Burberry Outlet Questions

Does Burberry Outlet offer an NHS or key worker discount?

Burberry does not offer a permanent, verified NHS or key worker discount scheme. There is no Blue Light Card partnership or Health Service Discounts programme. As a luxury brand, Burberry manages its discounting carefully; the outlet itself is the primary route to reduced-price Burberry goods.

Does Burberry Outlet offer a student discount?

Burberry does not operate a permanent, ongoing student discount scheme. Third-party discount sites sometimes list promotional codes, but these are not authorised by Burberry. The outlet store and the Burberry.com seasonal sale sections are the most reliable routes to reduced prices.

How much discount does the Burberry Outlet offer?

The Burberry Outlet typically offers 30–60% off mainline retail prices on past-season clothing, accessories and bags. Savings on iconic pieces such as the classic trench coat tend to be at the lower end; seasonal ready-to-wear and accessories can see deeper reductions. Note that some outlet items are produced specifically for outlet sale rather than being reduced from a mainline price.

What is the Burberry Outlet returns policy?

Items purchased at a Burberry Outlet Store are not eligible for refunds. Burberry does, however, accept exchanges of unused and unaltered outlet items within 14 days of purchase. Items must be in their original condition with all Burberry tags attached and any accessories included. Personalised items and pierced jewellery cannot be exchanged. This policy does not affect your statutory rights.

Is delivery free from Burberry?

Free delivery is available on orders from the main Burberry website (uk.burberry.com). Delivery terms for purchases made directly through Burberry Outlet stores may differ; check with the specific outlet at point of purchase.

Can I return outlet items to a mainline Burberry store?

No. Outlet purchases must be returned to a Burberry Outlet Store. Items purchased online from the main Burberry website follow a separate returns process and cannot be returned to an outlet. Similarly, outlet purchases cannot be returned via the online returns portal.
