Neal's Yard Remedies was founded on 4 December 1981 by Romy Fraser, a former teacher and single parent, who opened the first shop in Neal's Yard - a quiet, cobblestoned courtyard tucked behind Covent Garden in central London. The location gave the brand its name. Originally trading as Neal's Yard Apothecary, the shop was conceived as an alternative pharmacy, initially selling dried herbs, homoeopathic remedies, essential oils and Bach flower remedies. It opened alongside a group of similarly minded independent businesses in the same yard, all sharing values of sustainability, natural ingredients and community. The name was changed to Neal's Yard Remedies in 1986 when a franchise opened in Oxford, to avoid the implication of being a registered pharmacy.
Romy Fraser was supported from the outset by Nicholas Saunders, who ran Neal's Yard Wholefoods - the first wholefood shop in London - and who offered to split his premises and guarantee Fraser's bank loan. Natural cosmetics were soon being handcrafted at the back of the Covent Garden store, using organically produced herbal extracts and packaged in the iconic deep-blue glass bottles that would become the brand's most recognisable signature. The blue glass was chosen for a practical reason: the pigment reduces the light reaching the product, protecting the delicate aromas and herbal properties and allowing formulations with few or no preservatives. The bottles are made in Yorkshire.
In 2006, organic farming advocate Peter Kindersley - founder of Sheepdrove Organic Farm and a former publisher - acquired Neal's Yard Remedies, driving a significant acceleration in the brand's organic certification programme. The company moved its headquarters from Battersea in South London to a purpose-built eco-factory at Peacemarsh, near Gillingham in Dorset in 2005, where it now has over seven acres of organic land growing 40 different herbs used in products. In 2002, Neal's Yard Remedies collaborated with the Soil Association to develop the first certified organic beauty standards, and launched the UK's first four certified organic skincare products. The brand was the first UK health and beauty company to be certified carbon neutral, and received a perfect score of 100/100 from The Ethical Company Organisation in 2014. Founder Romy Fraser received an OBE for services to the health and beauty industry in 2009. The company is now co-owned by Peter, Barnabas and Anabel Kindersley and is run as a family business.
Neal's Yard Remedies produce a full range of certified organic facial skincare, including cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums and eye creams. Bestselling ranges include the Frankincense Intense™ anti-ageing collection, the Wild Rose range, the Rejuvenating Frankincense Nourishing Cream, and the Wild Rose Beauty Balm - launched in 2004 and made with sustainably sourced rosehip seed and hemp oils and shea butter.
The body care range covers hand creams - including the Melissa Hand Cream, one of the brand's oldest certified organic products - body lotions, bath oils, soaps and deodorants. The aromatherapy range includes essential oils, blends and diffusers. Essential oils are a foundational part of the Neal's Yard product range and have been sold since the original Covent Garden store opened in 1981.
True to the brand's apothecary origins, Neal's Yard Remedies stock a range of herbal tinctures, supplements, homeopathic remedies and wellbeing products. This reflects the brand's founding philosophy that outer beauty and inner health are inseparable and should be approached holistically.
The haircare range includes shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments, all formulated to organic or natural standards. A men's grooming collection includes shaving products and skincare formulated for men, using the same certified organic and natural ingredients as the main product range.

The iconic deep-blue glass bottles are a practical choice as well as a design statement. The blue pigment reduces the amount of light reaching the product inside, protecting the delicate aromas, herbal properties and active ingredients. This allows Neal's Yard Remedies to formulate products with few or no preservatives. The bottles are made in Yorkshire and are designed to be reused and upcycled.
All Neal's Yard Remedies products are handcrafted in small batches at their eco-factory in Peacemarsh, near Gillingham in Dorset. The factory is set in over seven acres of organic gardens, fields and meadows where the team grows organic calendula, St John's wort, verbena and lemon balm used in their products. Every bottle, jar and tube is filled, labelled, packaged and hand-checked on site.
