Start Fitness History

Start Fitness was founded in 1991 by two keen runners in Cramlington, Northumberland. The founders came across a source of specialist running shoes through their athletics club and saw an opportunity to offer serious kit to fellow runners at competitive prices. That passion for performance has remained at the heart of the business ever since, with the majority of the team made up of runners, cyclists, swimmers, triathletes and other fitness enthusiasts.

From those origins in a catalogue and small retail operation, Start Fitness has grown into one of the largest specialist fitness retailers in the UK. The flagship store at 33-37 Market Street in Newcastle upon Tyne covers 30,000 square feet and stocks more than 25,000 individual products. The company also operates stores in Durham and Darlington. Start Fitness is a subsidiary of W&M Wholesale Limited and forms part of the Start Group alongside Start Cycles and Start Football.

The company has cultivated strong relationships with leading sportswear manufacturers over more than three decades, which allows it to offer the latest products from brands such as ASICS, Brooks, Hoka, Saucony, adidas, Mizuno and Garmin. Start Fitness was ranked 17th in the Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 in 2021, recognising its position as one of the UK's top privately owned growth companies. The store expanded its Market Street flagship ahead of the 2023 Great North Run, further cementing its ties to the North East running community.
