  • ESTABLISHED IN SCOTLAND 1895: Jamieson Brothers were established in 1895 where we began selling our potatoes on a horse and cart. Nowadays we offer a range of gardening products for your every need, whether you’re a manufacturer growing vegetables at scale, growing vegetables at the allotment or garden for personal use, landscaping outdoor spaces or are a budding gardening hobbyist.
  • HOW TO PLANT WINTER ONION SETS: Loosen the soil where you are going to plant the onions, so that water can drain away over winter. If the soil is heavy, mix horticultural grit or well-rotted compost into the soil before planting, to improve drainage, then plant the onion sets 10cm apart in rows spaced 20-30cm apart.Plant onion sets so that the tips are just proud of the soil surface. Snip off the wispy tail at the top of the onion sets
  • HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR WINTER PLANTED ONIONS: After the onion sets have been planted they can be left to their own devices, with little watering only needed if the soil is bone dry in autumn. Autumn-planted onion sets will need more watering in the following spring when the soil may dry out quicker. If weeds appear in between the onion sets, remove them by hand. Trying to remove the weeds with a hoe or trowel will risk uprooting or cutting the onions by mistake.
  • GET YOUR ONIONS GET OFF TO THE BEST START: Remember to rotate your crops to help prevent common onion problems such as stem eelworm and white rot. Orange pustules on the leaves indicate rust, but this isn’t a serious problem for onions (it affects leeks and garlic more), and won’t affect the onions themselves.
  • WHERE TO PLANT YOUR ONION SETS: Make sure that you plant winter onion sets in soil that drains well and doesn’t get waterlogged through the winter months. Onion sets for autumn & winter planting are hardy but winter wet can cause them to rot in the ground. Raised beds are perfect for growing winter onions, because of the improved drainage that they offer.
